The Tenth Circle: Synopsis

Hey all people! Actually I have tests for tomorrow, but I still open my blog and write things haha I am so not a good example of a middle-schooler. Now, while I'm writing this, I am enjoying a bowl of meatballs ahaha and it's pretty spicy so I drink a lot hihi. I'm gonna give you a synopsis of one of Jodi Picoult's novels: The Tenth Circle.

Fourteen-year-old Trixie Stone is heartbroken. Jason Underhill, her senior who is also her boyfriend, breaks up with her. Devastated, she creates scars on her arms using broken mirror and her father's razor. Her best friend, Zephyr, tells her that if she wants Jason to be with her again, she'll have to make him jealous when she is with another guy. Zephyr says that she can do it in her house, where she is having a party with hockey players, including Jason. The party includes some sex games, but Trixie manages to avoid them. Instead, she plays strip poker with Zephyr, Jason, and Jason's friend Moss. She then cries, and Jason kisses her.

When she comes home before dawn, her father, Daniel, sees something suspicious. His daughter is crying and her shirt (which is actually his wife, Laura's shirt) is a bit ripped. Trixie tells him that she has been raped by Jason. He can't believe that his daughter's life becomes dark because of the crime her ex-boyfriend has done to her. This reminds him of his past in Alaska, which is filled by crime as well, like stealing, shoplifting, drinking, etc. He rushes her to the hospital and he phones Laura who says she's at the college where she's teaching to finish some work. What he doesn't know is that Laura has cheated on him with Seth, her own student, and she is not at the college. Instead, she is at Seth's place and they sleep together.

Trixie's life is turned upside down, and so is Jason, Laura, and Daniel's life. Nearly nobody supports or believes Trixie except her parents, because Jason is a popular hockey player and he is known as a good teen. Jason and his family gather every information they could get to prove that he is innocent. Laura feels that if she was not at Seth's and at her own house, the rape wouldn't have happened. Daniel tries to do whatever it takes to protect his child, because he doesn't want Trixie to be harmed anymore.

But before Christmas, Trixie gives different statements with the ones she gave at the hospital at the night she told her father that she was raped. She said that she was still a virgin when Jason raped her, but Jason says that they've had sex before the rape. She says she doesn't really remember about the rape and she was unconscious when Jason did it. Her lawyer says that if it is true, then Jason will be charged not as a child, but as an adult and he will get the same punishment adult rapists get. From her blood test that was taken at the 'night of crime', it is known that the blood contains ketamine, a kind of illegal medicine that will make the drinker unconscious. Jason gets a serious problem with that, and thus he loses a college scholarship because of the case. He blames it on Trixie. Before (or after? I forgot) Christmas, he confronts Trixie, disobeying the rule that he mustn't see her, and asks her of what he has done to her until she does this to him. Daniel punches him, and he runs away. The next day, Jason is found dead after falling from a bridge into the frozen river.

At first, it looks like he committed a suicide. But later on, it is clear that he didn't fall accidentally, but someone made him fell and left him to die. The prime suspects are Daniel and Trixie, but through the bloodstain and a single red hair on Jason's watch, the major suspect becomes Trixie alone. Scared and confused, she runs away to Alaska using a fake ID that she steals from a woman she meets in a bus (or train?). When her parents realize that she has vanished, her father believes that she goes to Alaska, the place where he came from. In his childhood, he was mocked because he was the only white child there. In his teen years, his best friend died and everyone in the village believed he killed him. Thus, he ran away and left his past. Now, he has to face his past again to find Trixie.

There, in Alaska, Trixie realizes that what she's done is wrong. She shouldn't have given her virginity to Jason, and she wants to come back to her mom and dad. After she is reconciled with her parents, the police officers come to arrest her because she is suspected as the murderer of Jason.

In the end, it turns out that it was Laura who let Jason fell and died. Too bad her daughter has been arrested in the jail. Daniel says that he is not angry, and they'll fix things together.

This novel is great, but it is a little bit complicated, so you have to read it intensely. I LOVE JODI PICOULT!
